Process Journal December 17

Today I did some more research on WWF's official page on polar bears. I also started my design brief essay and wrote my information about polar bears. I did research because I will need that later when I'm filming my infomercial. I did the design brief because this will help me to outline my video and I can state exactly what I'm doing. This will also help me organize and summarize my information. I think it was interesting reading about polar bears and I learned a lot. Next after the design brief I think I'll start designing my final project.

Process Journal December 10

Today I worked on Criterion A) Investigate. I decided what topic I'm working on for the Infomercial for the Planet. I'm concentrating on Global Warming's effect on the Arctic Poles and Polar bears. When the ice in the arctic poles melts what will happen to animals who need ice especially Polar bears? I also started my research today. I found a site with an article from The Sunday Times in the UK. The article is called Polar bears drown as ice shelf melts. It's about the effect of melting ice on Polar bear habitats.
I did this because I'm interested in how Polar bears are affected by Global Warming. I think it will be fun to make a movie on this topic. I did reaserch because I might need that information when I'm filming my infomercial.

Process Journal December 3rd

Today we watched a video about Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect. It contained very detailed explanations of how the Global Warming works and evidence of the process. These are some facts I learned:
- Global Warming has caused sea levels to rise, heat waves, severe droughts, melting ice and snow, change in precipitation patterns and the climate generally.
- Seasons have become unsettled and the increase in warm temperatures can cause deadly disease epidemics like the West Nile disease.
- Sea level and temperature rise can cause terrible natural disasters.
- People are spreading nitrogen in the air which disturbs the supplying of oxygen by trees.
2 things we can do to be ready for Global Warming:
1. We can start preparing for climate change.
2. We can reduce our carbon dioxide wastes and save energy.
I think we watched this movie so that we get into more depth on the effects of Global Warming.
This document was also very current and explaining what's happening in the world right now. We learned a lot more facts and examples from this video that we had no idea from before. Now we have a wide range of knowledge about the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming. We can use this information in our final project video. I liked to watch the movie. It was interesting to learn even more about Global Warming. I feel like it was rewarding because now I know a lot more. Next we will use our understanding in the final project.

Avril Lavigne's break up

Ok this week Im writing in english as u can see. nothing special going on this week except that it was AIDS day on tuesday and Im likely going skiing on saturday with Justine :P.

Ive been wanting to comment on a very sad event for a long time now. Avril Lavigne's break up with Deryck Whibley. Or I don't know if its sad 4 u guys and it certainly isnt sad for Avril...shes been partying ever since or so I heard. But I just wan't 2 say a couple of things.
1. Don't get married if your gonna break up after 3 years.
2. If you get married stay together whatever happens.

Of course people break up all the time in Hollywood but Avril are u breaking up or divorcing? Coz they mean completely different things. But Avril I am very sorry 4 u and I really hope u don't dump Deryck completely. I know there's some love 4 him left in u. Don't do something ull regret later. Im a huge fan of u and "just concentrate on doing what u love which is singing your crappy heart out"(from Hannah Montana the Movie). I can't wait 4 ur new album!!! I heard that its more emotional and I really wish that itll be. Because u Avril really can capture peoples hearts if u pour ur own heart into it!!! Im looking forward for that!

<33: Teresa

ps. Ill be writing in english every other week and every other finnish.

Global Warming continued

Global Warming Quiz

My score was 100%. I didn't get anything wrong but I asked for help once.

Questions & Answers

Explore what could happen to US relations with other countries if:
  • Adequate alternative energy sources were developed and we no longer relied on imported fossil fuels for power/fuel?
If adequate alternative energy sources were developed instead of fossil fuels the USA's relations to other countries would probably get better. Other countries would accept the USA and we could fight together for a better environment. If the US started using the better energy sources other countries would follow the example. Because the USA uses so much fossil fuels, if they stopped it would have a huge positive effect on the Global Warming problem.

  • The US fails to limit greenhouse gas emissions while other countries are actively regulating such emissions?
If the USA fails to limit such emissions it would have a bad effect on relations to other countries. It would send the message that the US doesn't care about our environment and other countries. It might also cause other countries to stop regulating these emissions. Other countries would stop receiving some products from the USA and that might lead to an economic crisis.

Discuss the effects of greenhouse gases on the overall health of people worldwide. Address questions such as:

  • What types of illnesses/diseases can be attributed to greenhouse gas emissions?
All types of respiratory diseases can be attributed to greenhouse gas emissions. These diseases include lung cancer and pneumonia. Breathing in too many greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide can be very risky. Greenhouse gases can also cause a cough or breathing difficulties.

  • How can changes in the world climate increase health risks for people worldwide?
As I mentioned people can get more affected by diseases in the respiratory system. If the climate continually gets warmer it can result in no winters and no snow. Also, as the temperatures rise it gets drier in some areas and the amount of rain decreases rapidly. This may result in fewer fresh water resources and that is a major health risk.

Smart In Cyberspace Evaluation

Our first unit in technology this year was called Computer Safety and Ethics. We learned about issues in cyberspace and also about cyberbullying. I made a blog post of what I learned.

Investigate

In class we watched some video clips about cyberbullying. We also read a booklet which taught to be smart and safe online. We also made cyberbullying skits in groups and evaluated them.

Design

I had to make a decision of what I would do for my final project. I decided to make an informing blog post which also included tips for healthy internet use. I designed my project on paper and started writing a rough draft.

Plan

I didn't really make any strict plan of how I would use my time or what I would use. Although I planned when I would do some work on the project and when I would write the final draft. Sometimes I didn't use my time wisely but I still did finish about five days before the due date.

Create

I made a blog post called Teresa's Smart In Cyberspace. The question for this unit was "What is safe and proper to do online?" The AOI focus was Environments because the internet is a public place where you should care for your safety. The Learner Profile was Balanced because you should balance internet use in your life.

Evaluate

I think I did a good job on my project. I wrote lots of relevant details and my project includes everything that was in the handout. My project answers the unit question and also the AOI Environments and the Learner Profile Balanced was used correctly. I spent time on this project and everything was done thoroughly. Next time I could plan my time precisely and use it more wisely.

Test

My project was tested by Vanessa and Tiffany. They read it and gave feedback. Vanessa said that the idea of using my blog to post my project was very creative. It was long and I had lots of information. She thought the title was creative and there was lots of colour. Tiffany said that it was long, easy to understand and you could see that I spent lots of time with it. She also mentioned that the "Tips Corner" was very creative.

Smart In Cyberspace

Have you ever wondered if downloading free software or entertainment is safe? Have you thought where all that trash mail and chainletters come from? Have you been cyberbullied? You've come to the right place! Here in this blogpost I will be discussing some of the issues of being online and giving tips for a balanced life in the public environment of the internet.

Spam

- Commercial messages or any other email you have been sent without permission.
- Spammers collect email addresse
s from chatrooms, people's network profiles, or sometimes they just guess right.
- Spammers send the messages to everybody and they are usually tricky or way too good to be true.

Malicious Software -
Malware

- Spam can include malware which is software made to destroy your files or steal private info.

- Free animations, movies, or screensavers, etc. may hide malware!

Chainletters

- Messages that may contain jokes, sad stories, etc.
- They tell you to send the message forward to everyone on your list and if you don't they threaten you and say something bad will happen to you.
- Some chainletters have gone through the internet for years.

Phishing Private Information

- Phishing is people trying to get your private information.
- They are messages that ask you to update your data on a bank account, email address, etc.
- On the message there's a link that takes you to a site that looks exactly like the original and asks you to give your private info.

Not so tasty Coo
kies

- Computer files fr
om sites you've visited.
- By one number they identify your computer, browser, operating system, internet service provider, and any private identity info you have given to the site.
- When you visit a site, a cookie records the day, time, and how long you stayed.
- The next time you visit the cookie reads your chosen settings.

Aggregate Data

- Information usually got
by cookies.
- Owners of a website use this info to see how they can improve the site to get more people to visit, sell mor
e, or how moch to charge advertising.
- This data can't reveal individuals.

Third Par
ty

- Party means a person or a company.
- The visitor of a site is the first party, the site owner the second party, and any other person or company involved is the third party.
- A sites privacy notice should tell the visitor if the site contains a third party.

Anonymit
y

- People think they are anonymous online which means they cannot be identified.
- Some people do stupid things in the internet because they think they're anonymous so they won't get caught.

Cyberbullying

- Bullying or being mean to one another through cell phones or the internet.
- Some kids can get over cyberbullying but sometimes cyberbullying makes teenagers feel angry
, sad, or afraid.
- When mean things are being said through the internet it's hard to know if it's serious or not.
-Cyberbullies are usually people who feel stronger when they're putting someone else down but they are'nt still strong enough to do it face to face.

  • In order not to get spam, don't share your personal email address on sites that anyone can see it.
  • Don't reply and don't even read spam so the spammer won't know your address is live.
  • Simply delete spam and any other email you don't want.
  • Think twice before downloading free software or entertainment because it might hide malware.
  • Only download from sites you trust.
  • Don't open files attached to chainletters because they might be harmful to your computer.
  • Break the chain!
  • Don't fall for phishing!
  • When a site asks you to save your password, don't accept! It's a cookie!
  • Think before accepting cookies. Remember, they collect aggregate data.
  • Read a site's privacy note to make sure if there is a third party involved.
  • Don't do/say things in the net you wouldn't do or say face to face. You are never completely anonymous online.
  • If you're ever cyberbullied or feel uncomfortable chatting with someone recognize it and act:
Don't reply to a bully.
Block their messages.
If you want to, save the bully's emails for evidence.
Leave the website and sign off the computer.
Talk with a supportive friend.
Talk with a parent, teacher, or any other trusted adult.
  • Remember, the Internet is a public environment. Anyone can see what your doing.
  • Don't upload pictures of you or info you wouldn't show to a stranger.
  • Balance the internet in your life. Don't be online too much.
  • Discuss with your parents what would be an appropriate time in the internet each day.
  • Be responsible yourself. If being online starts to bother your school or social life limit the time.

Cyberbullying Skits Evaluation Group 4

A) What is cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is bullying or putting someone down through chatting on the computer or the phone. I think our group answered this question because I was the bully Katelyn and I told lies about Tess cheating on Alesha with Alesha's boyfriend. We could have improved by making it more clear that I was lying and Tess should have said it. I could have called Alesha names because that's cyberbullying.

B) How does it make kids feel?
Cyberbullying makes kids feel sad, angry and in some cases suicidal. Our skit didn't show this so clearly because Tiffany, playing Tess forgot to say: "I feel horrible" or "I feel sad". We could have improved by her saying these things.

C) How can we stop it?
To stop cyberbullying you should talk to an adult, your parents or a teacher. We showed this in our skit when Alesha and Tess went to talk with Headmistress Higgins and she said that if you get bullied in the internet you should talk to a parent or a teacher.

D) All people must speak.
In our skit everybody had an important role so everybody talked enough. Some things we forgot to say like Tess forgot to say how she felt when she was bullied.
